Command & Conquer fans have reason to celebrate. A 4K remastering of the first two games in the classic strategy series is in the works, specifically for the PC.
Both Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and Command & Conquer: Red Alert are getting the 4K treatment, EA announced on Wednesday. The three expansions will also be remastered and included in the price
EA is partnering with Petroglyph Games, where some of the original developers of the Command & Conquer franchise now work. Hopefully this will see some of the old magic and appeal of the original games brought to life in the remasters.
In addition, EA are also calling on Lemon Sky Studios to upgrade the old pixelated graphics into silky smooth 4K. Lemon Sky Studios also recently helped remaster another classic PC strategy game, StarCraft, which released last year to positive reviews.
The remastered C&C games are arriving following the not so great reception to EA’s latest Command & Conquer release, a game that isn’t designed for the PC, but for smartphones. Called Command & Conquer: Rivals, the free-to-play game comes to iOS and Android next month, but will include (surprise surprise!) microtransactions.
“Following the reveal of Rivals, we heard you loud and clear: the Command & Conquer community also wants to see the franchise return to PC,” Vessella wrote in a Reddit post last month. “And as a fan of C&C for over 20 years, I couldn’t agree more.”
In the same posting, Vessella said the remastered games will have no microtransactions.
EA hasn’t yet started development of the project. But it’s a good bet the remastered games will release in 2020, when the 25th anniversary of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn arrives. In the meantime, EA is promising it’s going to listen to fan feedback on remastering the classic Command & Conquer titles.
“The community is literally getting in on the ground floor of this project and have every opportunity to help influence how we build this remastered experience,” Vessella said in today’s announcement. “Please continue to engage on Reddit and community channels and help us create the best possible remasters of C&C and Red Alert!”
